After studying at the University of Bergamo, Giuseppe Frigeni moved to Paris where he studied contemporary dance with Françoise and Dominique Dupuy, Carolyn Carlson, Steve Paxton, Lucinda Childs, D. Gordon, and R. Barnes.
He collaborated as choreographer with Patrice Chéreau on DON GIOVANNI and WOZZECK, with Peter Stein on WOZZECK and LIBUSSA, Klaus Michael Grüber on TRISTAN UND ISOLDE, OTELLO and LA TRAVIATA, and with Luca Ronconi on DON GIOVANNI.
For many years he has worked with Robert Wilson as co-director and choreographer on opera productions as well as video projects and installations, at the same time presenting his own works. His career has seen him working in many of the major opera houses and festivals in the world: the Salzburg Festival, Opéra Bastille, Théâtre du Châtelet, Teatro Comunale in Florence, the Metropolitan in New York, Grand Opéra de Genève, Houston Grand Opera, Schaubühne Berlin, Théâtre de la Monnaie and Amsterdam.
Recent productions include staging SAINT FRANCOIS D'ASSISE by Olivier Messiaen conducted by Sylvain Cambreling with set installation by Ilya Kabakov and lighting by Jean Kalman at the RuhrTriennale; staging visuals and lighting design for a semi-staged version of LOHENGRIN for Opéra Bordeaux; staging visuals and lighting design for a semi-staged version of Landowski’s LE FOU at the Mogador for Théâtre de Châtelet. For Nationale Reisopera and Holland Festival he staged WET SNOW a contemporary opera by Jan van de Putte. In 2007 as choreographer he has collaborated with Klaus Michael Grüber for BORIS GODUNOV at Théatre de la Monnaie. For the season 2006/2007 at Opera de Bordeaux he designed and directed the new production FIDELIO and in Auditorio de Tenerife he revived his TURANDOT production that has been staged by him at the Teatro Comunale di Modena.
For festival Aix-En-Provence 2008 he has staged and designed the contemporary work of Pascal Dusapin PASSION, that has been touring to Strasbourg, Rouen and Paris and for Stadttheater St. Gallen in Switzerland he directed and designed LA TRAVIATA.
For Teatro Comunale of Ferrara he directed and designed Händel's PARTENOPE. This production will be revived in Naples in autumn 2009.
In the 2009/10 season he has been co-directing together with Bob Wilson the new production of ORFEO at Teatro alla Scala in Milan. |
